How to

Variation and personal preference abound, and this description is only the most common way that traditional shaving cream is applied:

With your finger, scoop about a gram of cream (the size of an almond) out of the jar and smear it in the bottom of your shaving bowl.  Whip it up with your moistened brush until it has a consistency like whipped cream.  Then use the brush to apply it to your face.  Shave, rinse, and enjoy your day!

Nuts and bolts

Varying the moisture level in the brush lets you control the density of the lather in your bowl: too wet, and the lather will be thin and fluffy – too dry, and it will be dense and flat.  You can get the brush fully wet with warm water, then gently shake it out to the desired level.

Different brands can behave differently.  When using a new product, try it with less water than you’re used to and add more until you get consistency that you like.

Do your own thing

Some guys like to mix cream up in the palm of their other hand, or even apply un-lathered cream directly to their faces before whipping it up.

If you’re new to this style of shaving cream, have a look online.  There are many specialty sites with directions, variations, opinions, and videos.

And then...

After your glorious shave, you can use the leftover lather to do a gentle washing of the rest of your face, leaving a balanced, satisfying feeling.
